Melin Daron Restoration Project

Regular visitors to Aberdaron may recall the sight of a sadly derelict mill, Melin Daron, near the centre of the village, directly opposite the thatched bakery, Becws Islyn . This historic mill dates from 1252, though in its current state it is easy to overlook, as it has been a tumbledown and neglected ruin for very many years. It is hard to imagine that this was once a busy working mill, grinding flour to supply the village and surrounding area.
However, an exciting community-based project is now underway to restore the mill to working order, and to create both a source of local flour again, and an educational and tourism amenity. Follow progress on the Melin Daron Facebook page, which is also seeking donations to help fund the restoration work. According to this, ‘donations will enable the production of genuine welsh flour from local wheat crops and the project will act as a social enterprise within the village to provide training, education and volunteering opportunities, as well as creating much needed jobs’.
